A Quick Guide to Chakras

What are Chakras?

In your exploration of the connection between body and mind you may have heard mention of Chakras and wondered what they are and how they can help you. Commonly used in the practices of yoga, meditation and Ayurveda, Chakra is a Sanskrit word which means spinning wheel. In this sense the term is used to refer to spinning wheels of energy within the body, of which it is believed there are 7 (some practices recognize as few as 4 chakras and some as many as 6).

Chakras are commonly tuned into as a means to center the body, the belief being that this focus will unblock energy in key areas and organs. Without this focus, these blockages will ultimately lead to ill-health and/or emotional and mental distress.

What is the significance of each Chakra?

Root Chakra (Muludhara) – found at the base of the spine. As its name implies this is the chakra of stability and security. Rebalancing this chakra promotes safety and calm.

Sacral Chakra (Svadhishthana) - found in the lower abdomen. Creativity abounds from this chakra, that is also tied into sensuality

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) - found in the upper abdomen. This chakra is commonly associated with fire and the sun. When balanced this chakra promotes feelings of self-confidence and self-power.

Heart Chakra (Anahata) - found just above the heart. A spiritual chakra, the heart chakra connects spirituality with physicality.

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) – found in the throat. As you might imagine this chakra is aligned with vocalization and the ability to communicate.

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) - found on forehead between the eyes. This is what is often referred to as our sixth sense or our intuition, our ability to read situations effectively.

Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) - found on top of head. With its prime position on the top of the head, it stands to reason that this is the chakra of enlightenment and spirituality.

How do you unblock or realign the chakras?

Now that we know that blocked or unbalanced chakras can be detrimental to both our physical and emotional health, what are the most effective ways to realign them?

There are a number of ways which will work to unblock chakras. You may choose to tackle individual chakras or take a more holistic approach. Methods which are popular and proven to work include:

Meditation

Massage

Yoga

Use of Crystals

Sound Therapy

Reiki
